British Tabloid: Russians took down Twitter
Atlanta (IP-192.com): The British tabloid The Sun speculates in today’s issue that Russian hackers may have been behind yesterday's global cyber attacks on Google, Facebook and Twitter.
A motive for the organized web assaults that completely shut down social networking site Twitter and disrupted access to Facebook may have been anti-Georgian sentiment one year after the war between the former soviet republic and Russia.
Hackers hijacked thousands of computers and used them to send messages to a target the websites at the same time, causing Twitter to crash and Facebook to slow down. Google was able to fend off the attacks.
According to The Sun, a Facebook executive revealed that a Georgian blogger who has accounts on all the websites was the target of the attack.
Facebook’s chief privacy officer Max Kelly said: "It was a simultaneous attack across a number of properties targeting him to keep his voice from being heard. We're actively investigating the source of the attacks and we hope to be able to find out the individuals involved in the back end and to take action against them if we can."
