Detroit (IP-192.com): General Motors will begin selling cars and trucks on the auction Web site eBay on Tuesday, according to a recent press release. The venture will involve 225 dealerships in California during a test-phase that lasts until September. GM hopes to expand the offer nationally if the test proofs successful.
GM promotes its cars and trucks with the slogan “Our best cars - Your best offer” through its own portal on eBay, called gm.ebay.com. According to GM, shoppers can browse a dealers’ inventory, ask questions, negotiate prices and arrange financing. Up to 20,000 vehicles will be listed on the site initially, so GM.
“Together with eBay Motors, GM and our dealers are reinventing the car-buying experience for our California customers,” so Mark LaNeve, GM’s vice president for U.S. sales. “As the dealer showroom expands from the parking lot to the laptop, this makes it easier for a customer to browse available new-car inventory, make an offer, buy it now, or send a message asking for more information from a dealer — all at the customer’s convenience.”
The test marks a new era for eBay, since GM will be the first automaker to sell new cars. So far, more than three million used vehicles have changed hands through eBay Motors.
