Redmond (ip-192.com): Pricing on new versions of Microsoft's portable Zune players, available on September 15, has been announced. A 16GB Zune HD will carry an estimated retail price of $220; the 32GB model will be $290.
The players will have built-in radios that can receive stations broadcasting in the HD format and can access digital stations that regular radios can't pick up. However, the players will also be able to receive regular stations.
The new Zune’s will also be able to play downloadable videos. And with the use of optional docking stations, they'll even be able to play HDTV-format videos on a TV set.
To make the offer even more interesting, the players will have touch screens and Wi-Fi capabilities. Microsoft still has a lot of work to do to catch up with Apple. In the first six months of 2009, Apple had an estimated 73 percent of the portable player sales in the U.S. Microsoft, which introduced the Zune in 2006, does hold a distant 4 spot with a 2 percent market share after SanDisk (9 percent) and Sony (3 percent).
