Tokyo (ip-192.com): Sony will ship all of its Vaio-brand PCs sold in the US with Google’s Chrome Web browser, according to a press release. The new relationship between Sony and Google could be the first of several agreements that could help Google challenge Microsoft’s dominant Internet Explorer.
"Our decision to carry Chrome is based not only on the browser's quality and functions, but also on our relationship with Google," a spokesman for the Japanese electronics conglomerate said.
Gaining more exposure for Chrome is an important step for Google. While Sony does not disclose Vaio sales figures in the U.S., the company expects to sell 6.2 million Vaio PCs globally in the current fiscal year.
Sony's Vaio PCs in the U.S. only carried Internet Explorer until spring. Now they are equipped with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Google’s Chrome browsers. The spokesman noted that Sony currently doesn't have any specific plans to start putting Chrome in Vaio PCs sold outside the U.S.
