Palm ditches Windows Mobile

Sunnyvale (ip-192.com): Palm, Inc. announced earlier today that it will stop making devices running Windows Mobile. Instead, the manufacturer of smart phones like the Palm Pre will concentrate on its products running its webOS software.

This means that Palm will discontinue supporting its Treo product line. The Treo Pro, which is aimed at business users, is currently the only model in Palms lineup that runs on Windows Mobile.

“Due to importance of webOS to our overall strategy, we've made the decision to dedicate all future development resources to the evolution of webOS,” so Jon Rubinstein, Palm's CEO. “Which means that going forward; our roadmap will include only Palm webOS-based devices.”

The announcement comes as Palm, Inc. continues to struggle. The manufacturer saw a net loss of $161.1 million in its quarter of fiscal 2010 results, compared with a loss of $39.5 million year-over-year.
