Google Wave invites up for Auction on eBay

Menlo Park (ip-192.com): If you want to ride the Wave, you may have to pay up first. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reports that some of the 100,000 invites Google send to developers and corporate IT departments to test the new collaboration tool (ip-192.com reported here).

However, some of the invites put up for sale did not connect to an invitation, but to hot air instead! A blogger in Baltimore offered an invitation for sale he didn’t have, according to the WSJ. The 30-year old from Baltimore was counting on a software developer friend to procure an invitation. Within hours, his auction had received 12,000 hits and 33 bids.

The blogger said he received an automated message from eBay, saying that he was violating the site’s terms of service by trying to sell an item without owning the copyright. While he removed the item, more invites to participate in the testing of Google Wave were put up for auctions by other users.

Blogging sites like Twitter are awash with chatter about Wave. The number one topic is asking friends whether anyone had an extra invite to share.
