Atlanta (ip-192.com): Are you looking for a free Holiday gift? How about free Wi-Fi access, courtesy of Google? The company just announced that it will provide free Internet at 47 U.S. airports, including Las Vegas, San Jose, Boston, Baltimore, Burbank, Houston, Indianapolis, Seattle, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando, St. Louis, and Charlotte. Additionally, as a result of the project, Burbank and Seattle airports will begin offering airport-wide free Wi-Fi indefinitely.
However, some major airports are missing on the list, including all three that serve New York City, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Chicago O'Hare, LAX, and Minneapolis-St. Paul. Over 100 million people will travel through the 47 airports between now and January 15, 2010, when the offer ends. During the same period, Google and Virgin America also are offering free in-flight Wi-Fi on all the airline's planes.
Passengers who log on to wireless networks at airports will be invited to make a donation to charity. Google says it will match donations made on all networks up to $250,000, and the airport that generates the highest amount per passenger by Jan. 1 will receive $15,000 to donate to a local charity.
