Nokia sues Apple, Apple sues Nokia

Cupertino (ip-192.com): Lawyers must be happy these days: After Nokia sued Apple in October claiming that the manufacturer of the iPhone violated ten different patents owned by the Finnish cell phone company, Apple did strike back. In a countersuit, Apple claims that Nokia's products infringe 13 patents that it holds. However, a press release on the matter does not specify which patents are the subjects of litigation, or what technologies and invention they cover.

Apple's countermove follows a typical pattern for this type of litigation, in which patent claims are often used as bargaining chips in an attempt to force a settlement. "Other companies must compete with us by inventing their own technologies, not just by stealing ours," said Bruce Sewell, Apple's General Counsel and senior vice president.

A Nokia spokesman said that it will take time to study apple countersuit. However, the action taken by Apple does not change anything fundamental in the case.
