Windows 7 Best-Selling OS Ever
Redmond (ip-192.com): Strong consumer demand for Windows 7 helped Microsoft to a bigger-than-expected profit jump in the most recent quarter. Sales in Microsoft's Windows division soared 70 per cent after the Windows 7 operating system raked in much better reviews than its predecessor, Windows Vista.
Exceptional demand for Windows 7 led to the positive top-line growth for the company," said Microsoft chief financial officer Peter Klein. Microsoft said it sold more than 60 million Windows 7 licenses in the three-month period ending Dec. 31. That makes it the fastest-selling operating system of all time.
But while consumer demand was strong, Microsoft's business division saw sales drop 3 per cent in the quarter. Its server software division experienced only a small 2 per cent sales gain during the same period.
Microsoft is set to introduce a new version of its Office suite, which traditionally is a strong revenue-generator, later this year. "However, our general view is a recovery will occur starting this calendar year and gradually over the next several years," Klein added.
Microsoft said its profit climbed 60 percent from a year earlier to $6.7 billion in the three months ended Dec. 31, 2009.
