Free BES Express for BlackBerry

0

Waterloo (ip-192.com): BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) Express is coming soon to a BlackBerry near you, Research In Motion (RIM) announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

BES Express is aimed at small- to medium-sized businesses (SMB’s) that want to take advantage of RIM's wireless BlackBerry mail and calendar syncing services, as well as its basic security safeguards, but don't want to pay for RIM's fully fledged BES offering. While the full version of Berry Enterprise Server starts at about $4,000 for a 20-user license, plus the costs of enterprise data plans for all devices on the server, the Express version will be available for free, the Canadian handset maker said.

The product will initially work only with Microsoft Exchange 2010, 2007 and 2003 and Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2008 and 2003.

With BES Express, BlackBerry users will be able to:

  • Wirelessly synchronize their email, calendar, contacts, notes and tasks;
  • Manage email folders and search email on the mail server remotely;
  • Set an out-of-office reply;
  • Book meetings and appointments, check availability and forward calendar attachments;
  • Edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint files using Microsoft Documents to go;
  • Access files stored on the company network;
  • Use mobile applications to access business systems behind the firewall.

RIM’s CEO Mike Lazaridis also made the first public demonstration of a real Web browser for BlackBerry. The new browser can produce accurate Web pages and zoom into and out of pages with reasonable speed. It scored 100 percent on the Web Standards Project's Acid3 test. The WebKit browser, available later this year, will download files quicker and display websites better, Lazaridis said.

RIM bought the browser-design firm Torch Mobile Inc. last year.
