China (ip-192.com): While representatives from Lanxiang Vocational School and Shanghai Jiaotong University denied any involvement in hacking attempts against Google and other western targets, U.S. cyber experts believe they have traced the hacking attack on Google to the two educational institutions in China, several newspapers report today.
US investigators also say that they have identified the source of the cyber attacks that hit a number of US companies, including Google. The Financial Times reports that the author of the code used to attack Google has been tracked. The paper says the alleged hacker is a Chinese "freelance security consultant in his 30s" who had published extracts of the attack code on the web.
Two weeks ago, students from Jiaotong University won an international computer programming competition sponsored by IBM, known as the “Battle of the Brains.” The University has alliances with elite American universities like Duke and the University of Michigan. The school has also long standing ties with Microsoft and Intel. Both companies moved into a research park adjacent to the university and frequently recruit students. Now the campus with more than 33,000 students is in the world-spotlight: is it a base for sophisticated computer hackers?
Jiaotong is also home to the School of Information Security Engineering, which specializes in Internet security. The school’s dean and chief professor have both worked on technology matters for the People’s Liberation Army, according to the school’s Web site. The Financial Times quotes U.S. experts as saying that Jiaotong has one of the best security departments in the country, with former government cyber commanders in residence.
