Twitter now scans for phishing links

San Francisco (ip-192.com): Twitter takes aim at phishing websites and other malicious attacks against users, the popular micro-blogging service said in a blog post. "By routing all links submitted to Twitter through this new service, we can detect, intercept, and prevent the spread of bad links across all of Twitter. Even if a bad link is already sent out in an email notification and somebody clicks on it, we'll be able keep that user safe."

Twitter already checks for malicious content in links posted by users. It uses Google's safe browsing API since August of 2009. At the time, the Twitter account of technology expert Guy Kawasaki was misused to post links to malicious websites.

If some users start to see a drop in the number of followers, it's not necessarily because they have been "unfriended." The followers lost may have been axed by Twitter.
