AT&T readies iPad competitor

Boca Raton (ip-192.com): As the official release date for Apple's iPad on April 3 nears (ip-192.com reported here), AT&T is already planning to expand its product lineup. The carrier announced that it will sell another tablet device based on a new version of Intel’s Atom processor, called "Moorestown." The new tablet will be based on an OpenPeak design, a Florida based company that develops hardware for Verizon Wireless and Spanish carrier Telefonica.

As the Apple iPad, the new device will use AT&T's 3G network to connect. It will be based on the Open Tablet 7, a Linux powered device from OpenPeak that features a 7-inch touch-screen with LED backlighting, a high definition webcam, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. The new device will also feature microSD storage, a USB port, and HDMI out to connect to a HDTV. The Open Tablet 7 includes a docking station for charging and port replication.

"Consumers will be able to use the device for social networking, downloading books, navigation, email and instant messaging, along with music, video and photo sharing," said AT&T in a press release. "By adding home security systems and energy consumption monitoring applications, homeowners will be able to enjoy quick and easy access to a total home dashboard."

Intel’s new "Moorestown" processor will be more powerful than current Atom processors and consume less power. The processor will be based on the 45 nm architecture and include an input/output Platform Controller Hub to support the connectivity mentioned above.  To lower power consumption, it will utilize Intel’s SpeedStep Technology and support low power DDR1 and DDR2 memory technologies.

Users will be able to customize the 1.15 pound tablet by downloading third party applications trough the OpenPeak App Shop. AT&T says that it will include OpenPeak Device Management Services "to remotely provision, monitor and update the tablet over a broadband network."

"We strongly believe that people are ready for a thin, easy to use device that brings together virtually every entertainment, communications and management function anyone could want," said Dan Gittleman, CEO of OpenPeak. "Our agreement with AT&T unites a number of powerful technologies, resulting in a product that will provide a variety of exciting uses, for many different types of consumers."
