San Francisco (ip-192.com): Cisco continues to roll out new products designed for small businesses. After introducing the Cisco Valet routers (ip-192.com reported here), a new line of unmanaged switches combine Ethernet connectivity with IPsec VPN support. The Cisco 100 series replaces earlier generation of Linksys-branded devices and all models include new power management features and capabilities.
The switches automatically determine whether to run in half- or full-duplex mode with speeds varying from 10 megabits per second to full Gigabit support. They can automatically detect the type and length of cables used to connect computers and other devices and adjusts power output accordingly.
"The idea is to help small businesses connect their business to the world, secure their network and communicate more effectively," said Robb Berger, director of business development, worldwide partner organization, Cisco Systems Inc.
The new switches come in 5- to 24-port configurations, and most models offer desktop and rack-mount form factors. The Linux-based devices feature automatic Quality of Service (QoS) functionality that prioritizes time-sensitive traffic such as Voice over IP (VoIP). Prices range from $57 to $413, depending on the model.
