PC shipments up 27 percent

Stamford (ip-192.com): Worldwide PC shipments are up 27.4 percent in the first quarter of 2010, according to Gartner Inc. Compared to the same period in 2009, ASUS shipped 114.8 percent more PC’s worldwide in the first three months of 2010, followed by Lenovo (up 59.2 percent), and Acer (up 54.3 percent).

"The stronger-than-expected growth was led by a robust recovery in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) PC market, which grew 24.8 percent in the first quarter of 2010," said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner. "All other regions recorded double-digit growth rates, although the U.S. and Latin America were slightly lower than what we had expected."

With 15,319 units shipped, HP continued to be the leader in worldwide PC shipments, but the company faced increasing pressure from Asian competitors. Acer shipped 12,003 units in the first quarter of 2010, securing the second rank, followed by Dell, which shipped 10,209 units.

"These first quarter results indicate that the professional PC market is gradually picking up, driven by PC replacements in mature markets," Kitagawa said in a press release. "With a relatively positive macroeconomic outlook, business demand was more forthcoming. Major PC replacement demand driven by Windows 7 will become more apparent in the second half of 2010 and the beginning of 2011."

In the U.S., HP shipped 4,367 units in the first quarter of 2010, followed by Dell with 4,082 units, and Acer with 2,728 PC’s. Again, Acer showed the biggest gain growing 50.9 percent compared to the first quarter of 2009, followed by Toshiba (50 percent), and Apple (34 percent). PC shipments totaled 84.34 million units worldwide and 17.4 million units in the U.S.

"The professional PC market has begun to show some improvement, driven mainly by small businesses. The future remains positive in this segment as organizations start to replace older PCs and migrate to Windows 7," said Ranjit Atwal, principal analyst at Gartner.
