Video clip showcases BlackBerry OS 6.0

Waterloo (ip-192.com): Research in Motion (RIM) used a YouTube to showcase its upcoming operating system (OS). Social media feeds and multimedia features controlled by a virtual keyboard are abundant on the floating display, bringing BlackBerry smartphones in line with devices that use Google's Android or Apple's iPhone operating systems. OS 6.0 will include a new music player and photo viewer. RIM's application marketplace, called App World, will be preinstalled.

It seems that RIM is moving to touch sensitive screens, allowing users to control the device via simple finger swipes, if the hardware supports the feature. The browser will be built on the open source WebKit, a layout engine that provides a set of classes to display web content in windows. The iPhone OS is using WebKit as the rendering engine, and other browsers like Google's Android and Palm's WebOS are built on the platform as well.

While details are still rare, BGR published some screenshots of RIM's upcoming new OS. The site reports that it will feature a customizable home screen and popups with gesturers. BGR notes that BlackBerry OS 6.0 scheduled for release in the June – July 2010 timeframe.
