Twitter comes to Google Android

San Francisco (ip-192.com): A new Twitter client application is available for phones running on Google's Android operating system 2.1 and up. The Android app will allow users to access and share tweets and pictures, view trending topics, and use the timeline widget on the home screen.

One of the more interesting features is the ability to sync contacts. Users can add Twitter followers to their Android contact list, merge photos, and add links to Tweets. While the Android app supports geo-location and lists, it does not support multiple accounts.

"Twitter for Android is a fantastic application to use, and sharing any link or photo is super simple too - just look for the share button in your favorite application and choose Twitter," says Leland Rechis on a Twitter blog. "Quickly access your timeline with the home screen widget, view a tweet location on a map, and see your friend's latest tweet in your phonebook, GoogleTalk list or any application that uses Android's QuickContact bar."

The application is available for download on the Twitter Marketplace. Twitter also says that Google will provide the code used to the open source community in the near future.
