Hurricane: WebOS based tablet from HP

Palo Alto (ip-192.com): Hewlett-Packard (HP) is working on a tablet-style device that will run on WebOS. The tablet, known as Hurricane, will utilize the open source based operating system HP inherited as part of the $1.2 billion Palm acquisition.

WebOS, which runs on the Linux kernel and proprietary components developed by Palm, would allow Hurricane to utilize multitasking. Furthermore, its graphical user interface is designed for touchscreen devices. WebOS makes use of modern technologies such as HTML 5, JavaScript, and CSS. It includes a feature called synergy that integrates information from social networking sites and services Facebook, LinkedIn, Gmail, and Yahoo.

According to a story from The Examiner which quotes an unnamed inside source at HP, the world’s largest computer manufacturer has pulled the plug on the Windows based Slate tablet to focus on Hurricane instead. If the reports are correct, HP plans to launch the new tablet style device late in 2010. Since the acquisition of Palm want be finalized until the end of July, the introduction of a new WebOS based tablet device before the end of the year would be ambitious.
