Better graphics: Apple updates MacBook

Cupertino (ip-192.com): An updated entry-level MacBook featuring a 13.3-inch display was announced by Apple. The $999 device boosts a faster 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, an Nvidia GeForce 320M graphics card, and a much better battery.

Compared to the previous-generation MacBook, the new graphic card provides an 80 percent performance boost, according to Apple. This makes the computer suitable for paying games like Doom 3 and Call of Duty 4. The MacBook ships with a 250 GB 5,400 rpm SATA hard drive and 2 GB of DDR3 memory that can be upgraded to a maximum of 4GB. A 500 GB hard drive is an available option.

"The new MacBook includes many of the great features found on the innovative MacBook Pro, such as an LED-backlit display, glass Multi-Touch trackpad and built-in long-life battery," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.

Gigabit Ethernet is provided, and HDMI, DVI and VGA ports allow users to connect a flat-panel TV or a projector. The standard widescreen display offers a resolution of 1,280 by 800 pixels. The new lithium-polymer battery powers the laptop for up to 10 hours and can be recharged up to 1,000 times. However, the polycarbonate unibody enclosure does not allow the user to replace the battery. The service is available through Apple for a $129 charge. Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth v2.1 and two USB 2.0 ports are provided.

Apple sells the refreshed MacBook in the U.S. through its online store.
