Twitter buys Smallthought Systems

San Francisco (ip-192.com): Smallthought Systems, a company that tracks user trends from websites, was acquired by Twitter. The micro-blogging site obviously wants to increase its analytics capabilities using the analytical dashboard Trendly before fully jumping into its Promoted Tweets advertising program. Twitter did already use Smallthought's Dabble DB online database that allows applications to run in a web browser. Unlike most traditional relational database systems, it uses a point-and-click interface rather than relying on programming.

"Up until about a year ago, we used an online database called Dabble DB to track and share information about our projects internally. While we've since moved that project management tool in-house, we maintain a relationship with Dabble DB's creators, Smallthought Systems," said Kevin Weil at the Twitter blog. "When Smallthought launched Trendly, a tool that helps web sites distinguish signal from noise in their Google Analytics data, we were among the first to try it. And, as Twitter is the world's largest Ruby on Rails-based web service, we are impressed with their frequent contributions to the Ruby and Smalltalk development communities. Their team has a unique combination of entrepreneurship, creativity, and analytics expertise."

Twitter announced that it will integrate the Smallthought staff into Twitter's analytics team.
