Palo Alto (ip-192.com): Hewlett-Packard (HP) plans to develop its own social networking site. Called 48Upper, the service is aimed at IT professionals and will incorporate the usual social networking tools including friend-connections, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.
"48Upper provides IT professionals with the tools and knowledge necessary to be more productive by solving problems and finding solutions more efficiently than ever before, and most importantly, without ever having to leave what they are working on," HP says on the newly launched website here. "48Upper is a powerful on-demand service designed for simplicity and ease of use. It addresses the processes of running IT, where the collective knowledge and power of the community is available to all and is built directly into the service."
Basically, the service is designed to use queries to build IT related libraries. Users can decide if and how to share the information they store in the system. If they allow public access, other subscribers can use it. A virtual room tool will provide an interactive workplace for remote collaboration. To be useful to most IT professionals, HP says that the new database will not be limited to its own products and services. The Palo Alto based company wants to establish 48Upper, which is named after a building occupied by HP, as software-as-a-service (SaaS) that will allow IT staff to manage processes from a single source.
HP says on the 48Upper website that "The combination of function and fun will transform the way IT Professionals work, connect, share, and ultimately, succeed."
A short video posted on YouTube titled "48Upper, IT is fun again" is great at explaining nothing. However, since HP is just preparing a Beta release, there is still time for the new social networking service to grow on its intended users.
