Calls accepted: Google Voice out of beta

0

Menlo Park (ip-192.com): Google Voice, Google’s free telecommunications service, is now freely available to users in the U.S.  Invitations are no longer required. User can choose a phone number and link it to any or all of their existing phones. Incoming calls will then be routing to the phones connected, and users can pick-up the call on their preferred device. If a call goes into Google’s voice mail, the service transcribes the message and forwards it via email or text messaging service.

While inbound and outbound calls to and from the U.S. and Canada are free of charge, international calls can be made at very competitive rates. Users must have an established U.S. telephone service to activate Google Voice. Services like call history, conference calling, call screening and blocking of unwanted calls are available. Users can move incoming calls from one device to the next while they are on the phone.

"A little over a year ago, we released an early preview of Google Voice, our web-based platform for managing your communications," says Google on its Voice Blog. "We introduced one number to ring all your phones, voicemail that works like email, free calls and text messages to the U.S. and Canada, low-priced international calls and more - the only catch was you had to request and receive an invite to try it out. Today, after lots of testing and tweaking, we’re excited to open up Google Voice to the public, no invitation required."

Google says that more than 1 million people are already using Google Voice. The Gmail-style interface allows easy screening of all calls received, voice mails, and SMS. Personalized greetings can be set based on the number calling, and conversations can easily be recorded and achieved by pressing 4 while on a call. An extension for the Google Chrome web browser alerts users about new messages and makes it easier to access many features.

"Over the past year, we’ve introduced a mobile web app, an integrated voicemail player in Gmail, the ability to use Google Voice with your existing number and more," Google says. The company describes the service in an entertaining 2 minute video.
