Cloud computing has certainly several advantages, among them the fact that users can access cloud based applications through a light weight desktop, simple web browser, or mobile app. For an organization such as NOAA with thousands of employees in the field, this is a true advantage. Furthermore, cloud computing can help to reduce the IT overhead and provide better performance.

Cloud computing is usually offered as Platform as a service (PaaS), delivering a computing platform and/or solution stack. Needed applications can be added as 'on-demand software' or Software as a service (SaaS). Fees can add up quickly, and change at any time.

However, moving 25,000 mailboxes to the cloud seems to be a smart decision, offering a 50 percent costs reduction, better accessibility, and new capabilities.
