Symantec is now offering free antivirus scans. After downloading and installing the Norton Security Scanner (available here), it will automatically scan the target computer once a week for malware, replacing the need for manual security checks.
The Norton Power Eraser can detect and eliminate deeply embedded and difficult to remove crimeware that traditional virus scanning doesn't always detect. Since the program uses aggressive methods to detect these threats, there is a risk that it can select some legitimate programs for removal. Users should use the tool only after they have exhausted other options. Norton Power Eraser is available as a free download here.
Facebook users can take advantage of a free new service called Norton Safe Web that scans newsfeeds on the popular social networking site. Norton Safe Web is a website rating service from Symantec. The service warns users when they try to visit sites that might infect their PCs or compromise their personal information. After login in to Facebook, users can access the application here.
