The open source CMS Joomla uses object-oriented programming (OOP) techniques and the MySQL database for managing and publishing content. Written in PHP, the latest stable version 1.6 includes significant new features such as the ability to use template styles and overrides to modify the appearance of pages, nested categories, and a color-coded CSS and HTML editor.
A new abstraction layer enables the open source CSS to run on different backend databases. Permissions can be applied to individual objects or an entire site via the access control system. Furthermore, new users that register through the CMS can now be manually approved. The media manager allows uploading multiple files, and administrators can assign one user to multiple groups.
The official Joomla Extension Directory lists almost 7,000 plug-ins. Joomla will automatically detect any missing dependencies such as PHP or MySQL then install and configure them before installing the CMS. Meta-keywords and meta-descriptions can be assigned to articles, categories, and menu items and users can easily add a site name to the HTML page title.
Joomla 1.6 offers better user management and a more granular access control and is available for download here.
