Santa Clara (ip-192.com): Intel has released version 2.1 of its Linux derivate called Moblin. The improved OS focuses on increased functionality for netbooks using the Intel Atom processor. The update comes with a lot of bugs fixed, along with new features and customer requested improvements. Among them are:

3G Support: Currently it supports 3G connections only with the Ericsson MBM 3G modems.

New Internet Browser: Moblin 2.1 comes with a new browser that supports plug-ins and add-ons. Intel says that version 2.1 is also much faster and more reliable.

Clutter 1.0: The OS now comes with the all-new Clutter 1.0, a Moblin animation framework.

Bluetooth Device support: Version 2.1 is able to discover and pair with Bluetooth devices through a toolbar panel.

Connection Manager: It now supports 3G, Wi-Fi, Wi-Max and Ethernet and has improved reliability and performance notifications.

Nettop support: Moblin 2.1 supports a wide range of nettops, due to the UI scaling.

Instant Messaging: Support has been slightly improved and integrated with the Connection Manager. It supports transparent connections to local network computers.

Moblin is an open source project focused on building a Linux-based platform optimized for mobile devices including netbooks, Internet devices, and in-vehicle infotainment systems. Moblin 2.1 comes with Linux kernel 2.6.31, Intel Linux graphics driver 2.9, X server 1.6.4, and Mesa 7.6. Moblin is currently available in English, Spanish, French, Swedish, German, Finnish, Brazilian Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Chinese Simplified and Traditional Chinese.

Moblin 2.1 is available to download as a 790MB image suitable for burning to DVD or copying to a USB stick and can either be installed from those media or run as a LiveCD/USB. Instructions for using the Moblin live image and release notes are also available.

San Francisco (ip-192.com): A demonstration of Moblin 2.1, a Linux based operating system aimed at running Netbooks, showcased features of the next version of the Moblin operating system that eventually may find its way into cell phones and smart phones. "We're flushing out the software side," so CEO Paul Otellini at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco. "In these new spaces, in [consumer electronics] and in handhelds in particular, and to some extent in Netbooks, the Intel side of the world is lacking the viral apps development that you see, say, on the iPhone."

Intel recently signed a deal with Nokia to produce mobile devices that connect to the Internet. According to a press release, they would be based on Linux. However, it is not clear if Moblin will play a role since Nokia just introduced another Linux-based platform called Maemo on its N900 phone. "The Nokia N900 shows where we are going with Maemo and we'll continue to work with the community to push the software forward," so Anssi Vanjoki, an executive VP for Nokia, during the presentation of the smart-phone. "What we have with Maemo is something that is fusing the power of the computer, the Internet and the mobile phone, and it is great to see that it is evolving in exciting ways."

Microsoft announced during the forum that it will port its Silverlight 3 technology to the Moblin OS. Silverlight 3 may run on Intel Atom based Netbooks loaded with Moblin OS as early as the first quarter of 2010.
