Seoul (ip-192.com): A new processor for mobile applications has been released by Samsung. Orion features two 1GHz Arm Cortex A9 cores. Each core comes with a 32KB data cache and a 32KB instruction cache. A 1MB L2 cache will allow applications to run concurrently in a multi-tasking environment. The new processor is capable to encode/decode 1080p video, and a HDMI 1.3a interface supports up to two on-device displays plus one external display. Orion is capable of 30fps playback.

"Consumers are demanding the full web experience without compromise while on the go," said Dojun Rhee, vice president of Marketing at Samsungs System LSI Division. "Given this trend, mobile device designers need an application processor platform that delivers superb multimedia performance, fast CPU processing speed, and abundant memory bandwidth. Samsung's newest dual core application processor chip is designed specifically to fulfill such stringent performance requirements while maintaining long battery life."

Orion integrates a set of interfaces commonly used in mobile devices to configure various peripheral functionalities, Samsung says in a press release. Manufacturers will have a choice to use different types of storage including NAND flash, moviNANDTM, SSD or HDD providing both SATA, and eMMC interfaces. They can also choose their appropriate memory options including low power LPDDR2 or DDR3, which is commonly used for high performance. In addition, a global positioning system (GPS) receiver baseband processor is embedded in the processor to seamlessly support location based services (LBS), which is critical in many emerging mobile applications.

The new processor will become available in the fourth quarter of 2010 and is scheduled to go into mass production in the first half of 2011, Samsung says.

Washington, DC (ip-192.com): Concerned about cell-phone radiation? The Environmental Working Group has you covered! The Washington, DC based advocacy group has rated cell phones, based on how much radiation they emit. The tracking tool allows visitors to check radiation levels for 1,200 models of cell phones and smart phones, and results can be reviewed using criteria such as carrier, regular and smart phones, and legacy phones.

Cell phones do emit what is known as non-ionizing radiation, a far less intense form of energy than the ionizing radiation associated with radioactive materials and X-ray tubes. However, researchers, consumer advocates, and the wireless industry remain divided over the safety of cell phones. The new site represents the latest approach in a debate over the impacts of exposure.

Several Samsung phones ranked top as low radiation emitting phones, Motorola and Blackberry models, made by Research-in-Motion, dominate the list of ten high emitters. The Environmental Working Group also offers practical advice on how limit exposure.

"We would like to be able to say that cell phones are safe, but we can't," so Olga Naidenko, a senior scientist at the Environmental Working Group and the lead author of the study. "The most recent science, while not conclusive, raises serious issues about the cancer risk of cell phone use that must be addressed through further research."
